Finish this famous phrase: If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, ________________. I’m willing to bet you said “…you’re going to keep getting what you’ve been getting”, right? Well, guess what, campers! That’s no longer true. Now, if you keep doing what you’ve BEEN doing, you’re going to get less and less and less in return. Think about it. Turn on your car radio right now and you’ll likely hear that car dealership ad…you know the one…screaming at you about how RIGHT NOW is the BEST TIME EVER to buy a brand new car, ONLY at (insert dealership’s name here). But there’s a problem with that ad. As soon as we hear it begin, we immediately change the station or turn the volume down. Why is that? We’ve gotten wise to the lies! The pure saturation of marketing over the last 20 years or so has made us more sophisticated “users” of marketing. We know this can’t POSSIBLY be the best time ever to buy that new car, because they told us LAST WEEK was the best time ever. And guess what next week is going to be. We know it’s not true. We recognize it as spin and paid advertising. So running that same old commercial week after week, month after month will begin to deliver fewer and fewer results.
Your staff says it all the time. So does your Board chair. And your volunteers. Your members. Even YOU say it sometimes. “That’s just the way we’ve always done it around here.” Well that’s just not good enough anymore. We can’t have people changing the station on us or turning down the volume and ignoring us. We need to do things differently, say things differently, look at things differently. We can’t be afraid of doing something unexpected…something shocking…something different…like doing away with a few “sacred cows”.
Sometimes, you just have to punch a nun in the mouth!
